Räikkönen was a successful karting driver before he went racing for Renault at the age of 20. In that year he won 13 of the 17 races in which he rode. He also has driven a short time in the Formula Renault 2.0.
Peter Sauber was so impressed by the young Finn that after a testrace he gave Räikkönen a contract for the Sauber Formula One team for the season of 2001. Although Kimmi had no experience in Formula 3 and Formula 3000, normally the series from which a Formula One driver would graduate, and so it was not immediately possible for him to drive in the Formula One, since he could risk on the job. But with enough support he was still allowed to drive for Sauber that year.
Räikkönen married on July 31, 2004 with Jenni Dahlman. Jenni was elected in 2000 as Miss Finland and she became second in the Miss Scandinavia election.
